Manager, Marketing & Communication

The Manager of Marketing and Communications leads strategy, design, execution, delivery and analysis of all Career Management Center collateral and communications to students, employers and other Thunderbird and external communities to increase awareness of CMC events and initiatives toward the overarching goal of increasing the graduate employment rate.

Primary Duties and Responsiblities

  • Propose, plan, develop and oversee delivery of all CMC collateral, communications, publications, marketing campaigns and new strategies and technologies to enhance constituency communications through digital marketing, social media and print materials.
  • Creatively brand CMC initiatives to increase positive relations with employers, students, Faculty, staff and prospective students, ensuring adherence to school branding standards through collaboration with the Thunderbird marketing department.
  • Develop content and messaging which supports Thunderbird’s strategic plan and the CMC’s objective to increase the graduate employment rate.
    Plan, create and execute all Career Fair and Professional Development Week marketing to students and employers to increase employer and student attendance and interaction.
  • Research latest online job search strategies and technologies. Advise the team and develop curriculum to teach incoming students how to use social media while seeking a job.
  • Act as main contact to CMC team for promotion of CMC events and initiatives to students and employers via newsletters, print and social media.
  • Promote student usage of CMC-endorsed job search strategies and related resources via on-campus platforms, social media, newsletters and strategic communications with campus leaders and clubs.
  • Lead the creative design and production of e-mail newsletters and annual publications such as the Recruiter’s Guide and Employment Report for print and online distribution to employers and Thunderbird stakeholders.
  • Create other print documents as assigned including TREK books, face sheets, job board flyers and more.
  • Create and update internal and external web content.

Other Duties

  • Collaborate with various administrative departments and campus groups as appropriate to supplement and enhance delivery of CMC messages.
  • Conduct research of competitor communications and general marketing trends to ensure incorporation of best practices.
  • Manage the media and collateral expenditures for the department seeking ways to optimize communications while reducing related expenses.
  • Assist in the planning of overall department objectives.
  • Engage in team projects, initiatives and other career management activities that support the overall objectives of the department.
  • Educate Thunderbird communities about CMC activities to build internal support and awareness.
  • Conduct fiscal-year review of department marketing costs to assess merit of year’s expenses, propose expenditures to eliminate, and arrive at an appropriate projection for next year’s budget.
  • Additional duties may be assigned at the discretion of the manager to meet business objectives and this job description is not intended to be all inclusive.
    Manage relationships and contracts with external service providers, updating staff when necessary of changes in service

Experience/Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience in a marketing, communications, journalism or public relations role.
  • Minimum of two years work experience in one or combination of desktop publishing, digital marketing, social media, contact management systems, advertising, ad/creative design, public relations, original business writing, writing/drafting copy, newspaper/newsletter publishing.
  • Experience should include comprehensive knowledge of HTML and programs such as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Dreamweaver and InDesign.
  • Advanced working knowledge of Microsoft Office.

Communication

  • Must have very strong written communication skills, with the ability to compose coherent and well-structured communications pieces and develop effective marketing messages to stakeholders.
  • Must possess strong oral communication skills in order to synthesize ideas and concepts across departments, lead planning meetings, conduct persuasive arguments on strategy, execution and expenditures.

Contacts

  • Consistent contact with peers in the CMC.
  • Maintains relationships with Admissions, Marketing, Communications, Academic Services, Alumni Relations, I&IT and other school departments as necessary to complete the scope of work.
  • Communicates, negotiates agreements with and fosters relationships with local vendors for outsourcing of print materials such as banners, brochures, posterboards and other collateral materials and electronic subscription resources.

Supervision

This position has no direct reports, but can utilize the skills and therefore manage the usage of a Peer Career Advisor as needed.
