Najafi Global Mindset® Institute

The Preeminent Source for the Science and Practice of Global Leadership

The Science of Our Work:
Development of the
Global Mindset Inventory

The Global Mindset Inventory (GMI), developed by Najafi Global Mindset Institute at Thunderbird School of Global Management, is the world’s first and foremost psychometric assessment tool that measures and predicts performance in global leadership for the individual, group, or organization.

Developed through a rigorous theoretical and empirical process, the GMI provides insight into an individual’s, group's or organization’s Global Mindset. Global Mindset is defined as a set of attributes and individual characteristics that help global leaders better influence individuals, groups and organizations unlike themselves.

Process of Developing the GMI

Beginning in 2005, 8 professors with expertise in global business and cross cultural communications from the Thunderbird School of Global Management, ranked #1 in International Business, interviewed over 200 global executives.

These professors collaborated with other distinguished scholars around the world to define the concept of Global Mindset and develop metrics and scientific instruments to measure an individual’s, group’s, or organization’s profile of Global Mindset.  The result is the Global Mindset Inventory (GMI).

Contact Joy McGovern, Head of Client Services, for more information.

Highlights of the GMI:

  • Developed through a rigorous scientific process, including a series of GMI pilot tests with over 1,000 global managers
  • Criterion-related validity tests were carried out on the GMI with the purpose to determine the ability of the GMI to predict performance in global leadership for the individual or organization
  • The GMI instrument has followed a multiphase, multi-method, research methodology
  • Having impressive psychometric properties, as evidenced by its strong reliability scores and multidimensional validity properties, provides insight to an individual’s Global Mindset
  • The GMI survey consists of less than 100 questions which were developed and verified through a process of confirmatory factor analyses with internal and external reliability tests
  • The GMI instrument scales of Intellectual Capital, Psychological Capital and Social Capital were developed based on theory development and statistical analyses of the Global Mindset construct
  • Research has determined that Global Mindset can be developed and improved

Having a strong profile of a Global Mindset, as indicated on the GMI score, is a proven predictor of success in global leadership positions
